Holy Blossom Centre for Arts and Culture Presents:
Anne Dublin’s historical novel tells the story of the ILGWU (International Ladies Garment Workers Union) strike in Toronto during the winter of 1931.
1,500 Toronto garment workers, many of them Jewish and immigrant women, went on strike to protest dismal working conditions they faced in the factories where they were exploited and harassed by their employers, and their health and safety frequently endangered.
Evening Highlights:
•Our own Anne Dublin, author, editor, and teacher will read excerpts from her award-winning novel, 44 Hours or Strike, and share recollections of the Labour Movement and Needle Trades in Toronto. 44 Hours or Strike! won the 2016 Canadian Jewish Literary Award for Youth Literature.
•A group of Temple singers and musicians will enliven the presentation with protest and union songs.
•Old-fashioned light refreshments will be served.
•Anne’s books will be available for purchase.
