In our first Mishnah course, we discovered that most of what we observe in Judaism today comes not from the Bible but from what we call the Oral Torah, composed by the ancient rabbis. Part 2 will be a separate unit, so it doesn’t matter whether you attended the first part. In these sessions we’ll explore the traditions regarding the High Holy Days and Shabbat. In particular: How did Judaism evolve from the Temple to the Synagogue? How did the fixed Jewish calendar evolve? What types of activity are forbidden on Shabbat, and why? and How can we, as Reform Jews, ensure a meaningful observance of these holy times?
