Dawit Demoz was born in Eritrea, a country in East Africa ravaged by war with neighbouring Ethiopia. In 2009, facing overwhelming obstacles and many near-death experiences, Dawit fled home in an effort to secure a more stable life. He made his way to Israel and then, with the help of a Canadian Jewish family, to Toronto. This past September, Dawit became a Canadian citizen. But, Dawit’s family remains in Ethiopia as refugees, where they are caught up in a violent conflict that continues to spiral out of control and where they remain desperate for the financial assistance they need to survive and make it to Canada to re-unite with their loved one.
At this event, you will learn more about Dawit’s story. You will hear an inside account of what it means to be a refugee, to have your life turned upside down through no fault of your own. You will learn about the inspiring work of a small but dedicated group of concerned community members that is trying to help Dawit and his family re-unite in Canada. And you will learn about how you can help them, and Dawit, achieve their goal.
