A Jewish Response to Catastrophe: Midrash for a Troubled Time
Tuesdays, July 13, 20 and 27 at 12.00 p.m.
The destruction of the Temples reverberates throughout Judaism as one of the greatest catastrophes we faced before the modern area. It is emotionally recounted in the biblical book of Lamentations (Eichah) read on Tisha B'Av.
While the wounds of the calamity were fresh, our ancestors faced numerous challenges:
• How do you mourn a national catastrophe?
• How do you comfort a people in exile?
• How do you keep going?
We will explore the moving and sometimes surprising responses compiled in the midrash on Lamentations, Eichah Rabbah.
