A Temple Sinai Program: Lunch then Learn with Rabbi Shaner - Call Out Culture - Speaking Out for Justice and Compassion in the Babylonian Talmud
Tuesdays, July 7, 14 and 21 at 12.00 p.m.
Lunch first, then learn! There will be time to eat lunch together, socialize and get to know other participants in small break out rooms prior to learning together. Come prepared to schmooze with your lunch, coffee or a snack. The Talmud teaches us: Anyone who had the ability to protest and did not, is counted as complicit with those who do wrong. On the surface, this seems to be a black and white idea about justice and moral responsibility; when we look closer things get much more complicated. How do we balance the need for compassion and humility with the need to speak out? How can we account for unintended consequences and our own limitations? We will explore these questions with familiar Bible stories, argument, and humour in an extended meditation on justice, compassion, leadership, power, and humanity -- all packed in over the course of two pages of Talmud.
