Camp Director

J. Academy Camp and post-camp programs aim to bring Russian-speaking Jewish families and their children closer to their roots, their identity and a legacy of rich Jewish Russian heritage. We strive to empower our participants with identity-building activities and creative programming to connect them, on a meaningful level, to the Russian-speaking Jewish community in Toronto and around the world. The J. Academy Camp consists of three main elements: staff training (including J. Lead, a staff training weekend and a CIT program), 2 weeks camp session, and ongoing activities throughout the year. 

Goals of the position 

  • Direct J. Academy Camp maintaining the high standards and quality of J. Academy Camp and the related expectations of the Jewish Camp Council of Toronto/Camp Northland
  • Develop and run year-round programs related to engagement of camp counsellors and campers
  • Oversee budget of year-round programs and summer camp and provide reporting as part of the granting process
  • Oversee recruitment for campers and staff and be available for ongoing communication as needed for all camp related inquiries 
  • Create and maintain partnership with Ontario Council for Jewish Camp (OCJC), Hillel Ontario, Silber Centre for Jewish Camping, Foundation for Jewish Camp, Hillel and others
  • Continue creating the educational vision focused on Jewish Identity building for Russian speaking Jewish Canadians

J. Academy General

  • Oversee the recruitment of camper and staff for Summer 2022, 
  • Oversee recruitment and management of supporting staff that includes, but is not limited to, administrative, medical and wellness staff
  • Provide customer service to parents as related to camp
  • Manage J. Academy Camp Minder and process monthly camp charges 
  • Manage tuition, scholarships and other finances as needed
  • Complete proposal and report requirements as part of the Genesis Philanthropy Group/UJA grant and other relevant grants in a timely manner
  • Become familiar with current COVID protocols for pre summer and in-summer requirements related to Public Health
  • J. Academy Camp (on site) 
  • Oversee camp staff training and development
  • Serve as the leader of camp supporting the senior staff team
  • Manage all health & safety concerns, and disciplinary issues on site.  
  • Act as the point person for external funding agencies/Important visitors during camp  
  • Must be familiar with and at all times adhere to Ontario Camp Association (OCA) standards, as well as Camp Northland policies, procedures and expectations

PT/Seasonal staff

  • Oversee hiring, training and management of part time staff during the year and all staff for camp

Year-round engagement

  • Manage year-round camper and staff engagement calendar
  • Develop a strategic plan to engage campers and staff throughout the year with the goal of recruiting them to be part of camp in the summer
  • Direct and attend all year-round events including Shabbatons, training sessions and social events
