Communications and Membership Officer

Darchei Noam is seeking an organized and passionate Communications and Membership Officer to join our dynamic team of professionals. Darchei Noam is a vibrant and inclusive egalitarian Reconstructionist Jewish congregation in North York, Toronto. Our members include a diversity of family groups and singles from a variety of cultural and Jewish religious backgrounds including interfaith, intercultural families, and a variety of sexual orientations and identities.

In this role, you will be responsible for internal communications within the Darchei Noam congregation, and for presenting the face of Darchei Noam to the Jewish community at large. Furthermore, you will be responsible for Membership communication, and in particular all matters relating to membership records and contacts. In addition, there will be some other administrative duties as assigned from time to time.

Specific duties

  • The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and will maintain and improve communications with our members; Ensure that all congregants are informed in a timely manner of all services and activities in the synagogue; Keep up to date and communicate all relevant matters of interest in the greater Jewish community.
  • Responsible for design, composition, and distribution of all documents for distribution that are produced by the Synagogue office, the rabbi, service leaders, Education supervisor, programming committees, Board of Directors etc.
  • Design marketing and communications materials and produces materials including print and digital (posters, postcards, brochures), as appropriate including key High Holiday communications, weekly “What’s On” newsletter, program guides and materials that support our development efforts; Produce and publish Bereavement Notices & maintain the Misheberach list.
  • Maintain social media presence for a synagogue on various platforms, including but not limited to Facebook and Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram; Use data to evaluate marketing and communications to provide input into opportunities for improvements
  • Provide advice and consultation on communication strategies for groups such as Young Families, friends of DN and ShabbaTot.

Additional administrative Duties

  • Membership duties include Processing of membership inquiries and applications, renewals; Preparation and design of surveys of membership; Yahrzeit plaque orders; Yahrzeit list for weekly services.
  • Financial: this position will provide some backup for financial transactions on ShulCloud during peak workload periods. Training will be provided on the job.

Skills and qualifications

  • 2 - 3 years’ work in a related field.
  • Must have received two vaccination injections against Covid-19.
  • Relevant graphic and media education.
  • Superior written and verbal communications skills.
  • Experience working in social media.
  • Excellent customer service skills and relationship building abilities.
  • Experience working with lay leader and volunteers.
  • An ability to work as a team while taking responsibility for initiating and following through on necessary work.
  • A strong work ethic and an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • An understanding of the organized Jewish community, Jewish rituals and traditions, and a commitment to or sympathy with liberal Jewish values.
  • knowledge of Reconstructionist Judaism an asset.
  • knowledge in ShulCloud platform is an asset.

Employment details: This is a full-time position. Some additional hours may be necessary at High Holy Days times. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
