Please join UJA’s Health Care division and Dr. Marla Shapiro C.M. for the first in a series of three highly informative and engaging webinars exploring topics on mental health resilience during strenuous times.

 

This first session will feature Dr. Ayal Schaffer, Deputy Psychiatrist-in-Chief and Head of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Shapiro C.M. and Dr. Schaffer will discuss the pandemic’s impact on families and children when it comes to anxiety and depression. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and learn coping mechanisms to combat the mental health crisis brought on by COVID-19.

SPEAKERS

Dr. Marla Shapiro C.M.

Dr. Marla Shapiro C.M. completed medical school at McGill University and trained at the University of Toronto for her Masters of Health Science. She concluded her specialty training in Community Medicine, receiving her Fellowship in Preventive Medicine and Public Health from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She also holds a Fellowship in Family Medicine and is currently a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Marla Shapiro C.M. can be seen on CTV NewsChannel. She is the author of the bestselling book Life in the Balance: My Journey with Breast Cancer.

In 2015, Dr. Marla Shapiro C.M. was named a Member of the Order of Canada for her contributions as a family physician and trusted source of health information. One of this country’s highest civilian honours, the Order of Canada recognizes outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.

Dr. Ayal Schaffer (MD, FRCPC)

Dr. Ayal Schaffer (MD, FRCPC) is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. He is Head of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program and Deputy Psychiatrist-in-Chief at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto.

Dr. Schaffer is on the board of the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT), serves as Associate Editor for the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, and recently chaired the International Society for Bipolar Disorders Task Force on Suicide Prevention. His clinical work involves a combination of general inpatient care and an outpatient mood disorders clinic.
