By Leigh Brown -- When you need to drive your young child to a medical appointment or to visit relatives, it’s a no-brainer for most of us. But, what is a simple task to us isn’t necessarily the case for children under the care of Jewish Family and Child (JF&CS).
Countless children under the care of the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s partner agency are in desperate need of transportation to a number of important appointments.
JF&CS has always relied on the compassion and generosity of volunteer drivers, but with today’s increased challenges, more trustworthy drivers are needed than ever before.
That‘s where the JF&CS ‘Room for One More’ initiative comes in.
"The need is so great," explains Selma Elzas, Foster Care Coordinator, JF&CS. "Very often our foster parents are dealing with an overwhelming number of responsibilities, not only with their foster kids, but with their own children as well. If we had the help of more volunteers the need would decrease, and the overwhelming strain would be taken off the foster parent."
Drivers from all ethnic/religious backgrounds are welcomed. Flexible hours, a valid Ontario driver’s license and your own vehicle are required. One parent must be Jewish and single parent and lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender homes are welcome. Remuneration will also be provided.
Please consider becoming a volunteer driver. Your help is so desperately needed.
