Every year, UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s Global Seder initiative helps Jewish communities around the world celebrate Passover by providing access to the food, supplies and communal support needed to mark the holiday with dignity and connection.
Through Global Seder, UJA helps strengthen Jewish life in communities where access to kosher food and basic necessities can be extremely limited. The initiative is an opportunity for our Toronto community to stand in solidarity with Jewish communities around the world and ensure that families can experience the traditions of Passover together.
2026 Impact: Supporting the Jewish Community of Cuba
For decades, Global Seder has supported the Federation of Hebrew Religious Communities of Cuba. This represents approximately 765 Jewish community members across 363 families living in Havana and communities throughout the country.
In recent years, Cuba's Jewish community has experienced a significant decline in population, largely due to sustained emigration. Those who remain include a growing proportion of older adults and other vulnerable community members, many of whom rely on community support for food and other essentials.
Thanks to UJA Federation of Greater Toronto’s support in 2026, 9,022 kilograms (19,890 pounds) of food was purchased and shipped from Canada to Cuba. This includes gefilte fish, matzah, oil, canned goods, tea, and more.
This support allowed the Jewish community of Cuba to provide meaningful Passover assistance to families across the country, helping ensure that all 363 Jewish families had access to essential food and Passover supplies.
At a time of significant economic hardship, food shortages, inflation, and ongoing emigration, this support provided much more than the ability to observe Passover. It offered practical assistance and a sense of connection and solidarity to Jewish families, particularly older adults and other vulnerable members of the community.
