Salary: $19-22/hour commensurate with experience
Organization Overview
Makom Afterschool provides high-quality, pluralistic Jewish and Hebrew-language education in three neighbourhood public schools to students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5. Children from diverse Jewish families living in downtown Toronto find their place in our warm and welcoming community. Classes run on Mondays/Wednesdays and Tuesdays/Thursdays in three public schools around Toronto.
Responsibilities
- Assist twice (or four times) per week in a JK/SK, grade 1-2, or grade 3-5 classroom
- Support and maintain a positive, welcoming and inclusive class community and assist the Lead Teacher with classroom management
- Supervise breaks and snack time in conjunction with the Lead Teacher
- Pick up students from their public-school classrooms at the Afterschool site or at nearby schools and ensure they are checked-in and out according to Makom Afterschool policy
- Assist the Lead Teacher with teaching Hebrew literacy and conversation
- Assist the Lead Teacher with teaching Jewish values, culture, and traditions through a pluralistic and inclusive lens
- Assist the Lead Teacher with classroom set-up, clean-up, and record keeping
- Assist the Lead Teacher with parent/teacher communications
- Attend monthly staff meetings (paid) to co-plan learning opportunities and engage in professional development experiences
- Maintain regular and timely communication with the Director of Education
Qualifications
- Hebrew proficiency; fluency preferred
- Background in Jewish studies and tradition (e.g. Jewish holidays, religious and cultural practices, etc.)
- Experience with classroom teaching, camp counselling, early childhood education, after school programming, or youth work
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Commitment to children's social and emotional development
- Desire to grow and learn professionally
- Passion for working and building relationships with children
- Reliable and responsible
All Makom Afterschool staff are required to take CPR/Emergency First Aid training and pass a police Vulnerable Sector check, both of which will be paid for by Makom.
