In this lecture Jamie Michaels will discuss how comics can challenge racism in ways that are not possible in other forms, such as novels or films. Prominent Jewish comic creators such as Will Eisner, Art Spiegelman and Horst Rosenthal's works will be examined in terms of their use of stereotypes and caricature within the constrictions of the comic form. This lecture unpacks how Jewish comics draw attention to, employ, resist and wrestle with the conventional use of stereotype and how we can better understand what insights their practice might hold for both creators of anti-racist comics and comic studies as a discipline.
