The Empires Swallow Poland
The Jews were given a great deal of autonomy, creating almost a state within a state. The Council of Four Lands (Va’ad Arba’ Aratzot) was the central body of Jewish authority in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from the second half of the 16th century to 1764, located in Lublin. Three hundred years of relative peace led to advances in Jewish scholarship and the development of a cohesive community.
