Annual Report 2010 / 2011
UJA Federation’s $400 million Tomorrow Campaign, an unprecedented Jewish infrastructure initiative, continues to reshape our city’s Jewish skyline. The Tomorrow Campaign is making enormous strides, raising funds to build the infrastructure for our growing community across the GTA.
This year, tremendous progress was made on the construction of phase two of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus in York Region, where the future Schwartz/Reisman Centre and other facilities are scheduled to open in 2012. And on Sherman Campus, at Bathurst and Sheppard, the new Lipa Green Centre for Jewish Community Services and the Donald Gales Family Pavilion of the Prosserman JCC are bustling with activity, setting the stage for our next phase of development which will include centres of excellence for arts and culture, health and wellness, education, recreation and more.
Construction of phase two of the Joseph and Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus is well underway, and anticipation is mounting for the Fall 2012 opening. Located on Bathurst Street, north of Rutherford Road, the 50-acre site will serve the diverse recreational, educational, social, cultural and wellness needs of individuals and families in Vaughan and all of York Region.
Already on campus is the beautiful Kimel Family Education Centre housing the northern branch of TanenbaumCHAT. Opening soon will be the incredible Schwartz/Reisman Centre (SRC), occupying approximately 95,000 sq. ft. at the campus’ Community Service Complex. The SRC will house the Phil Granovsky Sports & Recreation Pavillion, the Gorman Shore Goodman Childhood Education Centre, and a Community Arts Centre.
The complex will also be home to the Sharp Family Atrium, the Leo and Sala Goldhar Conference and Celebration Centre, various social service agencies and an ambulatory care centre from Mt. Sinai Hospital.
Each of these exceptional facilities will enhance and anchor our community, but together on one campus, they demonstrate our deep commitment to Jewish values and tradition, and will enhance the quality of life not only for the Jewish community, but for all of its neighbours as well.

Fifty years ago, the “North Y” was inaugurated at Bathurst, north of Sheppard, on what was then an empty ravine. Nearly 25 years later, the Lipa Green Centre for Jewish Community Services was erected on the same site. Now at the heart of Jewish Toronto, these two landmark establishments are being rebuilt and refurbished, as part of the creation of Sherman Campus– a brand new “city” on the 27 acre site.
A bustling junction of humanity, theatre, music, art, health and wellness, Sherman Campus will represent the intersection of hope, opportunity, services and concern for all members of the Jewish community.
Anchoring the campus’ north end is the renovated and enhanced Lipa Green Centre, featuring a state-of-the-art Conference Centre on the Lower Level. At the south end will be the beautifully rebuilt Koffler Centre of the Arts and the Leah Posluns Theatre.
Also included in the family of buildings and services will be the new Jewish Museum of Canada housing the Sarah & Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre and the Prosserman JCC which will include the Cynamon/Sokolowski Sports Complex and the already completed Donald Gales Family Pavilion.
And uniting Sherman Campus will be the Canadian Jewish Walk of Fame, a series of indoor paths and bridges connecting these remarkable facilities to one another - and to the community they serve.
Over the last two decades, the Greater Toronto Area has experienced a resurgence of Jewish life south of St. Clair Avenue. This community renaissance has become a proud and powerful example of what the Tomorrow Campaign can accomplish.
The refurbished Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, located at Bloor and Spadina, along with the Wolfond Centre for Jewish Campus Life, have not only overhauled the way we deliver community services, but have also contributed to Toronto by adding enhanced facilities and programming in the south.
At approximately 3,500 members, the Miles Nadal JCC has transformed a tired urban corner into a hub of Jewish activity in the downtown core. Similarly, the incredible Wolfond Centre for Jewish Campus Life has revolutionized the manner in which the GTA's 4,000 downtown Jewish university students connect with Israel and Jewish life.
