A Temple Sinai Program — Twelfth Annual Renaissance Film Festival December 2, 3, 4
We welcome back Susan Starkman, film educator, as our guest speaker for the weekend.
Friday Evening: Green Park (UK, 60 minutes, English). Where thoughts of summer holidays now turn towards Israel, the Caribbean and America, it was once the height of exotica for British Jews to contemplate a week away in Bournemouth. For a considerable post-war period, the seaside town’s kosher hotels were the vacation venues of choice for Jews across the social spectrum. The history of the most opulent, the Green Park, is being lovingly retold in this documentary.
Saturday Matinee: Labyrinth of Lies (Germany, 120 minutes, German)
In Labyrinth of Lies the economic miracle is changing the life of Germans in post-war Germany 20 years later. Most of them are sick of the war and prefer to push their guilt to the back of their mind. When a journalist identifies a teacher in the playground as a former guard from Auschwitz, no one wants to take notice. But a young prosecutor takes on the case and can’t even be stopped by his superiors.
Dinner: Film Festival Participants
Saturday Evening: Shtisel (Israel, Episodes 1 to 3, 45 min. each, Hebrew)
The Israeli hit TV show Shtisel focuses on a Haredi family living in Jerusalem. Akiva and Shulem Shtisel, father and son, sit on a little balcony overlooking streets of the Geula neighbourhood of Jerusalem. A year has passed since the mother died. All the other children have left the nest, and only Shulam and Akiva remain — quarreling, making up, and laughing about themselves and the rest of the world.
Sunday Matinee: Shtisel (Israel, Episodes 4 to 6, 45 min. each, Hebrew)
