Two Toronto lawyers and Sherlockian scholars try to identify the real events
and people – many of them Jewish – hidden in the “Canon” of Sherlock
Holmes novels and short stories. They explore Yiddish translations of the
Canon, whether the stories display anti-Semitic language and, finally, they
present the amazing life, literary career and accomplishments of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Hartley R. Nathan, Q.C., received a B.A. at the University of Toronto (Arts), an LL. B at
Osgoode Hall Law School and an L.L.M. at University College, London. He is a partner in
the Toronto law firm of Minden Gross LLP where he practices corporate law. He was made
a Queen’s Counsel in 1982. He is the author of several legal texts and has published
numerous Sherlockian articles. He is a member of the Jewish Genealogical Society and was
on its board of directors for many years.

Clifford S. Goldfarb is a lawyer specializing in charitable and non-profit organizations with
Gardiner Roberts LLP. He has a B.A. and J.D. from University of Toronto and an LL.M. from
London School of Economics. He writes and speaks on legal topics. He is co-founder and
Chairman of the Friends of the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection at the Toronto Reference
Library. He is a member of the Workmen’s Circle /Arbeiter Ring and has an interest in
collecting Yiddish translations of Arthur Conan Doyle.
