The changes in our lives can create new mental concerns, or exacerbate existing ones, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and patterns of coping. SPEAKERS

Dr. Allan S. Kaplan MSc, MD, FRCP(C) - Vice Dean for Graduate and Academic Affairs and Professor of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto

Dr. Allan S Kaplan is currently Vice Dean for Graduate and Academic Affairs and Professor of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. He previously was the Director of the Institute of Medical Science, from 2011-2014.

Dr. Kaplan is also Senior Clinician Scientist at the Center for Addiction and Mental Health. His research over the past 35 years has focused on innovative treatment approaches for eating disorders and on the neurobiology and genetics of anorexia and bulimia nervosa. He has published 180 peer reviewed journal articles, two books, 60 book chapters and over 250 abstracts. He was the inaugural Chair-Holder of the Loretta Anne Rogers Chair in Eating Disorders at the University Health Network, the first endowed Chair in Eating Disorders in the world. He was President of the Academy for Eating Disorders from 2001-2002, and President of the International Eating Disorder Research Society from 2005-2006.

Dr. Karen Katchen, Ph.D.,C.Psych.

Dr. Karen Katchen is a Psychologist and Executive Coach. With over 40 years of experience, she brings a depth of knowledge to working with people experiencing life transitions, work or relationship challenges, or more acute mental health difficulties. Dr. Katchen is the founder of soon-to-launch TalkforTech offering coaching and mental health support to employees, managers and executives in the tech industry.

Dr. Katchen has held faculty positions in Medicine and Counselling Services at the University of Calgary and York University and has been an active member of Professional Boards as well as the Arts community. She is the very proud grandmother of six, and mother of three children, two of whom have started high growth technology companies. In her leisure time, Dr. Katchen is a stone sculptor, oil painter and children’s book author.

Dr. Zindel Segal, PhD - Clinical Psychologist and Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders, University of Toronto Scarborough

Dr. Zindel Segal, PhD is an award-winning clinical psychologist and Distinguished Professor of Psychology in Mood Disorders at the University of Toronto Scarborough. He and his colleagues created Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), a psychological treatment that prevents relapse in clinical depression at levels on par with antidepressant medication. His book The Mindful Way Through Depression, has been translated into 15 languages, with worldwide sales exceeding 350,000 and over 800,000 views on his TEDx talk devoted to the same topic. He has published 10 books and over 180 research papers related to long term vulnerability and resilience for mood and anxiety disorders. Dr. Segal continues to advocate for increased access to mindfulness-based clinical care for mental health.

Brian Prousky - Executive Director, Jewish Family & Child Service of Greater Toronto

Since 2016, Brian has been the Executive Director of Jewish Family & Child Service after having worked at the agency for five years, early in his career, as a Social Worker. Prior to returning to JF&CS, Brian held senior positions at York Region CAS and Durham CAS, where he was the Director of Services.

A passionate advocate for poor and marginalized children and families, Brian brings a client-centred approach to his work that is collaborative and strategic. In his current role he has led the transformation of JF&CS’ poverty reduction program, significantly enhancing the quality, quantity and connectivity of services while at the same time significantly improving client outcomes.

Brian completed his Masters of Social Work degree at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Yeshiva University.

Throughout his career he has chaired and served on many municipal, provincial and national committees representing the needs of children and families, most recently as the Chair of the Canadian Chapter of the Network of Jewish Human Service Agencies and as a member of the Ontario Provincial Government’s Child Welfare Modernization Table. Brian was also instrumental in creating regional programs in the areas of domestic violence and adoption.
