We will be joined by special guest Bret Stephens, an award-winning journalist and columnist for The New York Times, whose perspective and insight on global affairs will enrich the evening. The discussion will be moderated by Ken Tanenbaum, chair of UJA's Board of Directors.

Bret Stephens

Bret Stephens Bret Stephens is an op-ed columnist for the New York Times. Since joining the publication in 2017, Bret has written about foreign policy, domestic politics, and cultural issues. In addition to his work at The Times, in 2021 Bret became editor in chief of Sapir, a Jewish quarterly published by the Maimonides Fund.

He previously served as editor in chief of The Jerusalem Post, a position he took at the age of 28. He has reported stories from Gaza to Greenland and is the author of America in Retreat: The New Isolationism and the Coming Global Disorder.

Bret is the recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, including three honorary doctorates, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for commentary at the Wall Street Journal.

Bret was raised in Mexico City and holds a B.A. from the University of Chicago and an MSc. from the London School of Economics. He sits on numerous academic advisory boards and was a co-founder, with Garry Kasparov, of the Renew Democracy Initiative, an organization dedicated to advancing democratic principles throughout the world.

He and his wife, Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, a music critic and entrepreneur, live near New York City and have three children.

Ken Tanenbaum Ken Tanenbaum is the Founder and Chairman of Kilmer Developments, which has had a leading role in the construction and operations of such transformational projects as the ONroute Highway Service Centres, the Pan Am Athletes’ Village, Brightwater at Port Credit, and the West Don Lands Rental Housing program; he is Chairman of Kilmer Brownfield, which is committed to creating value by remediating and repositioning contaminated land; he is the Executive Chairman of Coca-Cola Canada Bottling; and, he also serves as Vice Chairman of Kilmer Van Nostrand, a family holding company with interests in sports & media, private capital investments and real estate & infrastructure. He has a long history of volunteer leadership with many organizations. Ken is passionate about the promise of Canada and is committed to aligning Kilmer’s business interests with building healthy cities and vibrant communities. He lives in Toronto with his wife, Jennifer, and their four children.
