Sharing the light of the menorah across the GTA

Thriving Centres of Jewish Life host simultaneous Chanukah celebrations

By Daniel Horowitz--It was truly a Chanukah to remember across the Greater Toronto Area, as more than 1,400 members across Toronto’s Jewish community, enjoyed a unique holiday celebration, sponsored by UJA Federation.

Uniting men, women and children of all ages and backgrounds, to celebrate Chanukah were the three new centres of Jewish life in the GTA – Vaughan’s Joseph & Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus; Sherman Campus at Bathurst and Sheppard, and downtown at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, which included a Chanukah swim - made possible through UJA Federation’s Tomorrow Campaign.

A fourth location, the LOL Lounge, downtown, hosted over 400 participants between the ages of 20 and 30, who celebrated Chanukah with great music and dancing.

The event marked the first time that all three new community campuses offered a simultaneous program for the entire community.

“It was great seeing this amazing Jewish community come together in so many locations simultaneously across the GTA," said UJA Federation President and CEO, Ted Sokolsky. "These kinds of events point to the great depth of diversity and passion each of our neighbourhoods have to add in building a great community.  We've always said that our new community campuses will be judged much more by what actually takes place inside the new buildings we are creating as opposed to buildings themselves.  Nights like these prove just how true that is."
