Helping South Africa Organizations

Jewish social service organizations in South Africa provide essential support to a significant portion of the local Jewish community, touching thousands of lives each year. These organizations rely heavily on philanthropic support to fund the majority of their annual budgets and to deliver critical assistance based on need, including food security, rental housing support, education, healthcare, and care for seniors, people with disabilities, and children through residential and community-based programs.

While local communities continue to give generously, operating costs — particularly for food, healthcare, and utilities — continue to rise, and demand for services steadily increases across South Africa:

  • Government funding for Jewish communal welfare is virtually non-existent.
  • A disproportionate number of community members depend on welfare support.
  • Emigration is at an all-time high, resulting in the loss of many longstanding donors and community leaders.

These challenges constrain local fundraising so United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto (UJA) and Jewish Federations of Canada – UIA (JFC-UIA) are calling on the South African community here in Canada for help. UJA is raising funds for JFC-UIA initiatives with Johannesburg Jewish Helping Hand (Chevrah Kadisha), King David School’s Foundation and Herzlia Foundation Trust.

No matter where they live, South African Jews maintain a deep connection to the country and its people. South Africa remains home — and the community remains one family, united by shared responsibility and care for one another.

In accordance with the Income Tax Act and Canada Revenue Agency guidelines, I confirm that no benefit of any kind has been provided to me, or to anyone designated by me, as a result of this donation. I consent to UJA releasing my name and donation amount to JFC-UIA, and JFC-UIA sharing that information with Chevrah Kadisha, King David School’s Foundation and Herzlia Foundation Trust.

I also acknowledge that donations made to UJA recommended for South Africa will be provided to JFC-UIA, recommended for their approved initiatives. To cover internal costs, there is a 2% JFC-UIA internally allocated charge for all South Africa fund donations. UJA will issue a tax receipt to donors for the full value of the donation.
