Shem Tov Awards Recipients

Shem Tov Awards are presented, in partnership with agencies, to leaders representing the highest level of excellence in volunteer service in Toronto’s Jewish community.

Stephen A. Adler

Chai Tikvah Foundation ​

Stephen is a Manager at StrategyCorp where he specializes in working with the City of Toronto and other GTA municipalities. Before joining StrategyCorp, Stephen worked as the Associate Director, Ontario Government Relations at the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA). He worked in similar capacities at UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and the Canadian Jewish Congress.  

Stephen has a Master of Arts in Political Science from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as well as undergraduate degrees from both Carleton and Brock Universities. He is a Vice-Chair of the Chai Tikvah Foundation, a member of the Community Council of the Annex Shul and the Mental Health Cabinet of Sinai Health Foundation. In 2003 Stephen was a recipient of the City of Vaughan Volunteer of Distinction Award. Stephen was honoured with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in November 2012 and Chai Tikvah recognized Stephen’s volunteerism in May 2014.

Benny Goldmintz 

Circle of Care

Benny Goldmintz has held senior Board positions in a number of agencies and organizations including Circle of Care - Association of Jewish Seniors, Adath Israel Congregation, Baycrest and Steeles Memorial Chapel. His fine reputation as volunteer, senior advocate and leader is recognized throughout the community.  

Benny has displayed outstanding leadership qualities. He is dedicated to working on advocacy issues which affect seniors, as well as other issues affecting the broader communities. Through his commitment to volunteering he has become an excellent role model for other seniors to get involved and be heard.

Benny graduated from the University of Toronto in Commerce and Finance and received his CA certification in 1950. His professional career spans well over 50 years. Benny has been married to Lilly for 55 years. Together they have one daughter - Roslyn Goldmintz-Wagman.

Edward D. Prutschi

Hillel of Greater Toronto

When not vigorously defending the interests of his clients, Mr. Prutschi, a former Governor of York University, can be found protecting the interests of his community through his active participation on the boards and committees of numerous organizations. Edward Prutschi is a dedicated volunteer and current Chair of the Board of Directors at Hillel Ontario. He is a graduate of the United Jewish Appeal Federation’s prestigious Joshua Institute and holds a certificate in Jewish Communal Leadership from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Edward served for a number of years as the Legal Representative to the Research Ethics Board of North York General Hospital and writes a monthly travel column for Precedent Magazine under the moniker, The Crime Traveller. He is also a regular Justice Columnist for Slaw, Canada’s online legal magazine. Edward is regularly called upon to provide expert analysis and commentary on legal issues for numerous media outlets, including CTV News and NewsTalk1010 radio. 


Edward is an active member of several professional organizations including the Criminal Lawyers’ Association. He is a graduate of CHAT and received his B.A. in Political Science (International Relations) from York University and his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School. He and his wife Dana are the proud parents of two daughters, Zimrit, 12 and Leora, 11.

Alan Levine

Jewish Family & Child 


Alan Levine earned his MBA from Queens University.  After beginning his career in marketing and then retail real estate development, he switched his focus into running a family investment office. His involvement with Jewish Family & Child began ten years ago.  His parents, Irving and Ruth in partnership with Lionel and Helaine Robins gave a capital gift to help create the Levine/Robins Community Services Offices that would be the home for JF&CS at the Lipa Green Centre.  At that time, Alan also joined the Board of Directors at JF&CS and in 2014, became its president. 

Alan lives in Toronto with Ellen, his wife of nearly forty years, and his three grown children, Amanda, Adam and Lauren.

Terry Borer

Jewish Free Loan Toronto

Terry Borer is the Chair of the Board of Jewish Free Loan Toronto.  He also serves on the boards of Jewish Immigrant Aid Services and previously the Montessori Jewish Day School. Terry is a member of the First Narayever Congregation. Terry is a senior manager at Intel Corporation, with over 20 issued patents to his name. He has led many technical projects and has managed teams in Toronto, Vietnam and Malaysia. Terry has an undergraduate degree in Engineering Science and a master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, both from the University of Toronto.
 
Terry’s passions include games of all sorts; he has played three of them at a world-class level. He is the lead author of the poker instructional book “Limit Hold’em: Winning Short-Handed Strategies” and enjoys the occasional game of Agricola. Terry’s wife Sara and their four children (ages 8, 5, 4, and 1) are very supportive and proud of the volunteer work Terry has done for the Jewish community.

Paul Solomons

Kehilla Residential Programme

Paul Solomons arrived in Toronto from the United Kingdom at the age of 19. He started his career in advertising working for Ogilvie & Mather. Paul worked in marketing and advertising for over 20 years before gaining his brokerage license and moving into the Real Estate industry. He currently acts as a broker with Forest Hill Real Estate Inc. 

After a 25 year career in the Real Estate Industry, Paul get involved in the community and thought Kehilla Residential Programme and its work in affordable housing was a good fit with his career expertise.

Paul has been married to Josephine for 28 years.They have two children, Ilana and Beth.

Dr. Carole Gruson 

United Jewish Appeal of Greater Toronto 

Dr. Carole Gruson was born in Manchester, England and emigrated to Toronto with her parents and two sisters in April, 1967. She has been married for 35 years to Charles Goldberg and they have three children, Stephanie, Hailey and Justin and a son in law, Corey Gross.  Carole is a Periodontist by profession and is in private practice as well as being a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Graduate Periodontics. She has held leadership roles in many professional associations including president of the Ontario Society of Periodontists and the Women Dentists Association and is currently serving as Treasurer, of Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity, Toronto Alumni Chapter.

 

Carole has been involved in several community organizations, serving as President of the PTA and later, President of the Board of Directors of Bialik Hebrew Day School. She sat on the Bialik Board for over 18 years and on the Board of TanenbaumCHAT for 5 years. She has also served as co-chair of Doctors4Wiesenthal and is a member of the Board of Governors of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre. She is also an active member of Canadian Haddassah Wizo. She feels very strongly about her commitment to UJA where she has served as a canvasser and Co-Chair of Dental Division for several years and is currently a Co-Chair of Lion of Judah Division of Women's Philanthropy.
