Wendy Eisen Leadership Development Award

This award, established to encourage young men and women to assume community leadership roles, is presented to individuals who demonstrate extraordinary commitment and service. It is named in honour of Wendy Eisen, an exemplary community leader who was active in all parts of community life – most memorably as one of the key leaders in the Soviet Jewry movement coming out of Canada. She has always been passionate about securing the Jewish future and in building up the next generation of leadership to do the same.

Carlie Samantha Schachter

ABOUT ME:

My name is Carlie Samantha Schachter. I grew up in Thornhill and still live here today. I went to high school at Crestwood Preparatory College and attended York University. Since graduating in 2014 from their business program, my career has been in management and marketing. I have been working for the past 6 years at a houseware company that specializes in kitchen products and seasonal items. As an e-commerce expert, I’ve grown , not only in my ability to manage major accounts, but to work as a valued member of a team. I also am passionate about making a positive impact on my community. Giving back to the community is an important lesson that my parents instilled in me from a young age. My network is strongly rooted in the Jewish community.

WHY I VOLUNTEER FOR UJA:

When I was a teen, my father introduced me to volunteering by having me donate my time to a UJA telethon. Although I was reluctant at first, I was encouraged by my father's rhetoric that we do not help because we ought to but because we can! This mantra has stuck with me till today and as a result, I have had the privilege of volunteering with UJA for many years. I am passionate about what UJA stands for and strongly believe in the values that underline the work that UJA does in Israel and around the world. This is why I choose to volunteer with the UJA , striving to continue to make a positive contribution to its upcoming campaigns. This opportunity has been reciprocal in that I believe that not only have I made a difference but that my life has also been enriched in many ways. It has been a privilege to be a part of an entity that enhances the lives of so many. Now more than ever, our society needs kindness and compassion and the lesson of "Tikkun Olam", so embodied by this organization.
